Microchipping is a procedure in which a microchip is inserted under your pet’s skin as a way to permanently identify them. It allows any organization that has a microchip scanner to easily identify your pet and contact you right away if they get lost. Most veterinary clinics, kennels and SPCAs have this type of scanner.
The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, small enough to be injected under your pet’s skin with a syringe. It’s similar to giving them a vaccine. The animal doesn’t usually have to be put under, but local anesthesia can be used if they’re more sensitive or reactive.
